Call For Papers

Linux 2008 will take place at the Manchester Conference Centre from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th November. The conference will follow a similar pattern to that of previous years, with a choice of two conference streams. We also plan to organise some tutorials on Friday 7th November.

We invite speakers on all aspects of Linux development. The programme will cover a variety of subjects, including kernel and desktop development, tools, applications, networking and security. Any topic likely to be of interest to Linux developers and enthusiasts will be considered.

Abstracts

Abstracts for the main conference or tutorial programme should be accompanied by a short biography, and, ideally, should be about 250-500 words long. Final papers should normally last about 45 minutes, including 10 minutes for questions and answers. If you need more time for your presentation, please tell us when you submit your abstract.

The Using Moodle tutorial will cover how to:

• Create a course in Moodle and add content, such as worksheets or links to websites
• Use forums, chats and messaging for communication and collaboration
• Set up assessment activities, with the option of students receiving instant feedback
• Manage students and monitor their participation
• Give students additional roles, such as forum moderator or, if necessary to restrict access

There will be opportunities throughout the tutorial for delegates to ask questions, and you’ll need to pay attention as questions may be asked too!

Delegates will be given a copy of the book “Using Moodle” plus supplementary materials describing how to make use of Moodle’s roles and permissions system.

Tutor Biography: Helen Foster is a Moodle administrator for the site with the most users (over 400,000 with more than 500 new users daily) – moodle.org – and is a facilitator for the Using Moodle course, which provides free 24-hour support for Moodle users worldwide. Helen now works full-time for Moodle as the Community Manager.

Richard Kemp, Kemp Little LLP: Richard is senior partner at Kemp Little and one of the UK’s top technology and communications lawyers. He has a particular reputation for developing commercial and innovative legal solutions to the business challenges of technology development, application, implementation and regulation.

Mark Henley, Kemp Little LLP: Mark is a technology lawyer in Kemp Little’s Commercial Practice. He has worked on a wide range of ICT projects in both the private and public sectors, from some of the world’s largest PFI and PPP procurements to Internet start-ups. Mark regularly lectures and writes about the legal issues associated with OSS and has advised on a wide range of related matters – from analysing the use of GNU/Linux in embedded systems to assessing investment opportunities in businesses dependent on OSS.
