Open Source Technology Stack: turn on the LAMP

Alan Lenton – Chief Technology Officer and Game Designer, ibgames will talk about the “Open Source Technology Stack” that has been in wide use for many years. This has relatively recently gained an acronym known as LAMP, which stands for Linux Operating System, Apache the most popular web server in the world, MySQL DBMS, and PHP scripting language or Perl or Python. Variations on LAMP include LAPP, where PostgreSQL is the database component rather than MySQL. Alan will also discuss Linux distributions and some of the strengths and weaknesses of Open Source software, and strategies for deploying it in business. The talk will also attempt to strip away some of the myths surrounding Open Source software – myths pushed both by fanatical supporters, and by equally fanatical opponents. This is a combined OSSG/BCS Oxfordshire Branch event.
