The risks from Tweeting and Social Media, from a potential stalker using free open source software !

Genuine case studies will be discussed.

The aim of this work was to determine how much information could be obtained about an individual using only social networking sites and a number of  freely available tools. The results were: home address, pictures of the individual, their friends and family, and most worrying of all, their routine daily movements. Most teenagers have a “profile” on a number of social networking sites, such as Facebook or Twitter, and use them without realizing how much they are revealing about themselves.

Dr Diane Gan is a Principal lecturer, co-founder and director of the C-SAFE Centre in the Department of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Greenwich. Diane has a PhD in network communications from the University of Greenwich. Diane is actively involved in research in cyber security and digital forensics. She introduced cyber security and digital forensics to the University of Greenwich at both undergraduate and master’s levels. She has also been the driving force in developing these degrees and the short course programmes from security and risk management to forensics and the law. Diane is a Chartered Engineer with IET. She is also a member of the BCS and belongs to the following specialist groups:- ISSG, IRMA, Cybercrime Forensics and BCSWomen. Ms Lily Jenkins recently graduated from the University of Greenwich with a first class honours degree in BSc Computer Security and Forensics. Her final year project was based on research into information leakage in social media sites, supervised by Diane Gan. She has recently co-authored and presented a paper at the 7th International Conference on Cybercrime Forensics Education & Training (CFET 2014) at Canterbury Christ Church University held in July 2014. Lily has continued with this research jointly with Diane Gan and they are currently writing a journal paper for submission by the end of August 2014. Lily is actively involved in a University of Greenwich initiative to educate school children about the dangers of information leakage from social media sites.
