    Open Source Grid Computing

    IBM, HP, Intel, and Nortel Networks have joined the Globus Consortium to promote Open Source Grid computing (Computer Weekly, 27 February 2005, p.20). The Consortium is promoting the use of an Open Source platform known as the Globus Toolkit.

    Please see http://www-unix.globus.org/toolkit/about.html for more details about the Globus Toolkit. This states amongst other things that “..the open-source community provides continual enhancements to the product” leading to greater technical innovation and more use of it.

    A major benefit of using Open Source software in conjunction with Grid Computing is the avoidance of problems caused by commercial software licensing terms. Generally such terms stipulate the number of processors a commercial software product is allowed to run on. Therefore if the maximum number is exceeded then this will be a breach of the terms of the commercial licence.
